ABOUT US

Our Mission
It Takes A Village Dog Rescue was founded in Athens, Ontario in December of 2021 by three individuals with a single common bond - a love of dogs. We had a desire to help Canadian dogs that found themselves lost, abandoned, neglected or mistreated and through no fault of their own were without a family and a loving home. It Takes A Village Dog Rescue was founded with the promise and intent of assisting dogs in need of re-homing assistance. We found that many other rescues at the time were focused on helping international dogs while Canadian dogs were suffering. We were especially concerned about dogs in Northern remote communities where access to veterinary care is limited and over population is significant and the climate conditions are relentlessly unforgiving, leaving many to perish due to the elements. Our goal is to help if we have the resources to do so.
Why the Canadian Focus?
When developing our vision for a new rescue our Board of Directors began to look into different organizations to see where they were focusing their resources, in hopes of finding groups that we could align with to make the biggest impact. What we discovered was a need right here at home that we had not realized existed. Although the members of our board had been involved with rescues for several years we had no idea how dire the overpopulation problem is in Canada's Northern and Indigenous communities was.

As we began learning about the magnitude of the problem our Northern Neighbors were facing, we were embarrassed. How could we devote our time day in and day out for years to saving dogs and yet be completely in the dark to such extreme conditions right in our own backyard. The more we investigated the situation the more we wanted to help. We knew that this was where our focus should go.

Sadly, these communities have been left with little to no assistance from the Canadian Government and have been told that it is a community issue to resolve. With next to no resources available, these communities have been fighting a losing battle for years. Volunteer organizations such as Sash-Mar Helping Northern Dogs, Flights for Hope, K9 Advocates, Manitoba Animal Alliance and countless of other groups have been working tirelessly for years to help our Northern Communities by raising awareness of the severity of the situation and have saved an incredible number of lives already thanks to those efforts!

In December once we opened our doors with a focus in dogs from Northern Communities, local shelters and owner surrenders; we jumped in with both feet and hit the ground running. Within 24 hours of our launch, we had our first arrivals to The Village; 5 Puppies from two separate situations; who arrived with the help of Flights for Hope. We named them after five very special dogs who captured the hearts of each of our board members as well as our first foster volunteer. They were dogs that changed our lives forever and since the arrival of our first Villagers was monumental, we thought the tribute was important. We continue to honour Remi, Taz, Tyson, Jessy and Misty every day and will never forget their stories.

Today, our mission remains the same. We have been lucky to align ourselves with several other organizations that share our beliefs and have worked with many of them to complete multiple large scaled missions. Some of our most successful quests include multiple trips by members of our team into remote communities to help with spay and neuter clinics, providing veterinary care, supplying medications and other needs; securing stray cats and dogs from remote communities and intaking them into the rescue; assisting communities in need after devastating wild fires left them in peril; securing multiple sled dogs from a closed kennel; securing multiple groups of dogs from shut-down backyard breeders. We know the work we do is only a small aide in comparison to the degree of the issue, but we will continue to focus on Canada’s dogs in need.
